Serving the Cowichan Valley of Vancouver Island, we specialize in the design
and installation of natural stone landscapes and veneer.
Dry Stack Retaining Wall with Natural Curvature, Shawnigan Lake.
Precision & an eye for detail builds a landscape that has a timeless quality to it. The term "dry stack" refers to masonry which does not require the use of mortar. Dry stack retaining walls are built the way our ancestors built walls - to tell its own story and to stand for millennia.
From 'faux-stone' to natural ledgestone, we use a variety of stone veneers to give your home accent. While some clients contact us to install stone veneer around indoor fireplaces, others contact us to install stone veneer around garages and along the front of their home.
Flagstone patios provide an artful & peaceful look to a backyard. We often use the local "San Juan" and "Renfrew Stone", sourced from the San Juan Valley of the west coast of Vancouver Island.
Whether to add a distinguishing feature to your home, for lighting or as a gate, stone pillars can provide a sharp ambience to the entrance of your home.
Here on Vancouver Island, stone walls built with mortar and local "blast rock" are a very popular way of retaining soil.
Stone columns outside the front door beneath a deck can be an economical way to build character into your home.
An economical way to retain soil or patio, Allenblock retaining walls are a simple yet effective way to retain earth. Priced per square foot, we install Allenblock and other manufactured stone retaining walls as a cost-effective alternative to our natural stone offerings.
New for the 2024 season, we are now offering Xeriscaping as an alternative to lawn maintenance. Xeriscaping is a way to avoid the headache of water restrictions while decreasing your environmental footprint. This is an ultra low-maintenance way to enjoy your yard.
We also offer Interlocking Stone Pavers and Holland Stone Pavers as an economical alternative to our flagstone patio installation. An Interlocking stone patio in the backyard, walkway in the front yard or driveway is a "quality yet cost-effective" way of building a complete landscape.
We use the ancient art of working with natural stone
to build beauty into your property and home.
We usually keep to being a two person crew. This allows us to maintain our priorities of precision and quality. Larger companies often compromise precision and quality for efficiency and profit. While having a larger crew can sometimes mean that projects which require less skill can be completed quickly, we have learned that precision and quality is not something that we are willing to compromise. Rather than merely being a job, we view stone masonry as an art and with any art comes pride.
The projects we work on usually require us to be on site for about 5 days. Seldom do we take on projects which would have us on site for more than 2 weeks, and the common theme seems to be that the majority of projects we work on have us on site for between 3 and 6 days.
During that time, we maintain a quiet, professional job site. While working with stone can sometimes require a lot of noise when cutting stone, we aim to keep our job site orderly and clean. Something we pride ourselves on is the most common piece of feedback that we receive from our clients: that Solid Earth Stoneworks communicates clearly and keeps its clients up-to-date on job progress at every step.
Stephen Robert Disher has been involved in stone masonry and natural stone hardscaping since 2008, when landscaping for the Summer to help pay for University. After completing his BA in Environmental Studies, Stephen went on to create an ecological landscaping business.
It was when being hired to do full-spectrum landscape installations that Stephen learned that his attention to detail and creativity was able to thrive when working with the irregular & imperfect contours of natural stone. At that time, Stephen decided to focus more on working with natural stone as a stone mason. This led to the creation of Solid Earth Stoneworks in 2019.
Off the job site, Stephen is passionate about local food security, community resiliency and enjoys playing music. During the off season, Stephen has spent time backpacking and exploring Central and South America. Here, from the steps of Taotihuacan, Stephen continues to learn the value in practicing what some call "the lost art of stone masonry".
"Stephen is a professional and we trusted his opinion."
"Solid Earth Stoneworks communicated very well and I wish them all the best in their business."
"Stephen is an artist at work and we recommend his services."
"The job Stephen did on our backyard flagstone patio is beautiful and it was a pleasure having him at our home."
